In January, Katie Sweetman opened Sweet Tox, an injection boutique, in New Berlin.
After just a few months, she's expanding her space, began building a team, launched a skincare line, and is working towards becoming a nurse practitioner.
A couple weeks ago, Sweetman's building manager told her that her neighbors were not renewing their lease, so she "took it up right away."
"I knew I wanted this to happen eventually, I just didn't know when," Sweetman said. "And now, it feels like it's such the right time."
By adding the neighboring space, Sweet Tox, 16644 W. National Ave., will increase by about 1,400 square feet. Sweetman plans to have the renovation complete in about three or four months.
No longer a 'one man show'
Sweetman is currently booked out until Novermber, which is why she's no longer a "one man show."
"It got really crazy," she said. "I just don't want people waiting that long to get in."
She hired an assistant a couple months ago, and is training a nurse to treat clients. She plans to hire two or three additional nurses within a year.
While training her team, Sweetman is continuing to bolster her own medical training.
In February, she began her journey towards becoming a nurse practitioner through Chamberlain University. She plans to graduate in 2022.
"I always want to offer the best I can for my clients," she said.
Sweetman graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a bachelor's degree in nursing in 2015.
To become a cosmetic beauty nurse, she attended Empire Medical Training in Chicago and has done about 20 more trainings across the country.
She began building Sweet Tox in 2017 inside Salon 147 in New Berlin, while working full time as an ICU nurse, then in a plastic surgery clinic.
In April 2019, Sweetman took Sweet Tox full time, and in January 2020, she opened her injection boutique.
New skincare line
Sweetman launched a Sweet Tox skincare line in March, about two weeks before the boutique suspended its services due to the coronavirus pandemic.
"It gave all of my clients something to do and hone in on while we were locked up in our houses," she said. "It was again the universe lining things up for me."
Sweetman said she worked with a company to create medical-grade products that are paraben free and not tested on animals.
Her products include cleansers, toners, serums, moisturizers, face masks, and lip glosses. Some target specific skin issues, such as acne, wrinkles and sun damage.
"Botox and fillers go hand-in-hand with skincare, especially from a preventative standpoint," Sweetman said.
Sweet Tox has been receiving online orders nationwide, from California to Florida.
"It's surreal," she said. "It's cool to look at the wall where I keep all of my products and think, 'Oh my gosh, OK, that has my name on it. That's pretty cool."
