KALAMAZOO, MI -- The Kalamazoo area has many local joints offering ice cream, frozen yogurt and other sweet treats to help beat the summer heat.

Whether you’re looking for an after-dinner treat or an afternoon snack, ice cream shops from downtown Kalamazoo to Parchment have you covered. Looking for a trip to Lake Michigan? South Haven offers your favorite ice cream treats too.

Right in the heart of downtown is The Spirit of Kalamazoo, which sells locally owned Plainwell Ice Cream along with a variety of Kalamazoo-themed clothing and other items.

Here you can order your favorite hard scoop ice cream in a cone or cup or have a milkshake or sundae. While you’re there, pick up a Kalamazoo-themed shirt or beer mug. The Spirit of Kalamazoo is located at 154 S. Kalamazoo Mall.

A newer option with a unique offering is Rollup Ice Cream and Bubble Tea, which opened in Kalamazoo in February. The shopoffers rolled ice cream in nearly 20 different recipes, including strawberry cheesecake, brownie batter, dairy-free orange dreamsicle and cookie dough delight.

There you can also get bubble tea and Rollup sandwich wraps. The shop is located at 3262 Stadium Drive.

“Rollup Ice Cream & Tea delivers the most unique, freshest, creamiest, richest ice cream available,” Owner Matt Searles said in a message to MLive.

The unique process begins with fresh cream poured over a favorite ingredient such as cheesecake, apple pie, fresh fruit or candy bars, Searles said.

“From fresh cream to delicious ready-to-eat all right in front of you,” Searles said. “Made to order every time.”

After a long hike on the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail, you might be looking for a refreshing ice cream cone. Stop off in Parchment for ice cream from Twisters.

The shop offers soft serve ice cream in a variety of menu options, including cones, sundaes, flurries or shakes.

Ashley Mulder, store manager, said Twisters, located at 330 S. Riverview Drive, recently added Dole Whip to their menu, a dairy-free soft serve alternative that comes in a variety of flavors.

Mulder heard from one parent who said her son was lactose intolerant but loved ice cream, she said.

“Now they have a place to go so he can have some nice cold treats while it’s 90 degrees outside,” Mulder said.

Do you prefer hard scoop ice cream? Check out Frosty Boy on Gull Road in Comstock Township. Here you can order cones of your favorite hard ice cream, a variety of soft serve menu options.

While you’re there, try a pizza, sandwich or wings from their kitchen. Check out this restaurant and ice cream shop at 5030 Gull Rd.

Looking for a ice cream after a road trip to South Haven? Check out Sherman’s Dairy Bar. The ice cream here is the made the old-fashioned way in one batch at a time, according to the shop’s Facebook page.

The shop is open noon to 10 p.m. every day at 1601 Phoenix St. in South Haven.
