With few of us jumping on airplanes and jetting off to exotic and faraway locales these days, we’re understandably jonesing for the next best thing. Sometimes that means creating a home design or outdoor area inspired by sunny international places. Sometimes that means watching our favorite movies set in far-flung places, or eating foods from all over the world.
And then there’s that all-powerful sensory alternative to jet setting: fragrances that carry us to distant destinations by virtue of the florals, spices and other elements native to those areas. Here’s a handful of notable scents that smell so magical, they transport you to another place entirely.
One from a wonderful Boston-based company: Rose Morning eau de parfum — a modern and lovely take on the classic (“Not your grandmother’s rose perfume,” says Fresh co-founder Lev Glazman.) that’s dewy and takes you straight to Bulgaria, via a subtle stream of Bulgarian rose, peach flower and freesia, balanced with bottom notes of white tea, velvet musk, warm amber. ($90 for 100ml; $50 for 30ml; $25 for 10ml on fresh.com).
Switching from Europe to India, the Hermes creation Un Jardin apres la Mousson eau de toilette ($138 on hermes.com) translates to “A garden after the monsoon.” It’s a sexy, spicy, floral cocktail that’s at once fresh but soothing, delicate but musky, and smells like tropical summer air. Think ginger-laced wafts of cardamom, pepper and vetiver. It’s part of an entire collection of scents by Hermes created as an homage to gardens around the world — from secret gardens in Paris and a traditional Chinese garden to gardens on the Nile River.
One of the most impressive things the talented perfumers at Jo Malone can do is artistically meld woodsy fragrances with florals, and mix regions in the process. One fine example: English Oak & Hazelnut cologne ($140 on jomalone.com) — it’s like an enchanted walk in the British countryside, what with its green hazelnut, verdant woodiness of vetiver and emerald moss carpets.
And if summer just isn’t summer to you without a luxury beach stay, do it up right with a trip to a chic-as-can-be Mediterranean resort. To recreate that, Frederic Malle has created Lys Mediterranee ($205 on saksfifthavenue.com). Sweet floral notes evoke summer nights filled with salty air, with hits of ginger, lily and orange blossom, and musk. It’s the kind of fragrance that sets you in the mood for a sunset, a cocktail, and leaves you feeling like you might just have had a vacation.
