Snow and a week of bitter cold - week.com

gemblongsa.blogspot.com

So far this winter season has been rather mild in terms of temperatures and snow accumulation. Mother nature must've been running late because conditions will feel like winter for the next week or so across Central Illinois.

A series of winter weather systems will move across the area this
weekend and the beginning of the new week with accumulating snow
possible with each system.

A Winter Weather Advisory is issued for the entire viewing area until late tonight as a snow band heads eastward across central Illinois. Light snow is ahead of the snow band. Snow will begin light before the band dumps 1-3" of snow for most areas this afternoon and evening.

The snow band has already dumped a few inches of snow in Galesburg (Knox Co), causing some accidents on the roadways.

Though our western counties are seeing accumulating snow, the snow band will be a quick hitter across the region. I expect the snow band to exit the viewing area after 8 PM this evening. Please be cautious when driving on the roadways this afternoon and evening.

Snow is not the only weather condition we are dealing with--bitter cold temperatures begin tonight. Temperatures will drop tremendously to well below zero over the fresh snow cover. These temperatures will also be combined with the wind chills. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect from tonight until late morning tomorrow due to wind chills reaching 10 to 25 below zero across central Illinois. The bitter cold and wind chills linger across the area for the next week.

These sub-zero wind chills do present a danger if not bundled-up properly. Frostbite can occur in less than 30 mins. Frostbite is the freezing of skin and the body tissue just beneath it. It starts by affecting exposed body tissue such as your fingers, toes, nose and ears. To minimize your risk of frostbite, make sure all body parts are well covered. Hypothermia is a dangerously low body temperature and is the most common winter weather killer.

Tonight, bitter cold temperatures. Low below zero with wind chills between -10 and -25. Lingering snow later tonight, but will begin to clear as the night progresses. Bitter cold continues for your Sunday. Highs will be the single digits with wind chills between -10 and -20.

Stay warm!
