LUBBOCK, Texas (February 21, 2021) – Lubbock Christian University came out hot, shooting 54.9 percent from the field in the first half, and cruised to an 88-49 win over UT Permian Basin on Sunday afternoon in the Rip Griffin Center.

The win moved the Chaps to 16-0 on the season and 14-0 in Lone Star Conference play while dropping the Falcons below .500 both overall (8-9) and in league play (7-8).

Nearly every Chaparral player saw action in the win, as LCU limited UTPB to just 49 points – the program's lowest single-game total in at least the last seven seasons, which is as far back as available records go. Parker Hicks led all scorers for the second-straight game with 18 points, and he was joined in double figures by Lloyd Daniels (15), Cameron Copley (13) and Ty Caswell (11). Rowan Mackenzie was the only Chap starter to not score in double figures, but the sophomore did have seven points on an efficient 3-4 shooting night.

All of Daniels' scoring was done in the first 20 minutes of the game, when he hit 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-5 from behind the arc. Caswell also had all 11 of his points in the first half, as the pair helped LCU start hot and build a 15-point lead by the first media timeout, putting the Falcons on their heels early.

A one-handed alley-oop dunk from Jalen Brattain sent the Chap crowd into a frenzy with 12:28 left in the opening period, and Daniels and Aamer Muhammad followed with back-to-back three-pointers to push the Chaparral lead past the 20-point mark for the first time.

LCU continued to rain down three through the rest of the first half, hitting on 10 of their total 19 first half attempts (52.6 percent), while holding UTPB Leading scorer without a made field goal. The Falcons did their best to keep things close, but the Chaps went into the locker room with a comfortable 27-point lead.

Lamar's cold afternoon stretched into the second half as he eventually missed his first seven field-goal attempts before finally getting a pair to go in late. The Chaps did cool off some in the second half, shooting only 43.3 percent, including only six made three-pointers, but UTPB's shooting percentage dropped as well.

Five quick points in the second half from Copley pushed the lead out to 30 for the first time and UTPB would not draw any closer the rest of the way.

LCU's bench got heavily involved in the final 15 minutes of the game. Ben Janssan came on and set a new career-high with six assists in just 10 minutes on the floor. Cade McDowell was a perfect 3-3 from the floor for six points and pulled down two rebounds. Zach Stepp also had two rebounds, hit a three-pointer and blocked a shot in his time on the floor.

Stepp's bucket from behind the arc with 6:29 left pushed the gap to its widest margin of 40 points. UTPB responded with a short 7-0 run, but the Chaps bounced back and led by 39 when the final horn sounded.

TURNING POINT
It wasn't a wire-to-wire win, but it was about as close as you could get. UT Permian Basin got the first two points of the game from Lamar at the free throw line, but LCU rattled off the next seven points and never really looked back from there.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
The Chaps matched their season-high in three-pointers made with 16 on the day. They also hit 16 in the Feb. 12 win against Western New Mexico. Most (10) of Sunday's threes came in the first half, and the Chaps shot 45.7 percent from behind the arc overall.

NEXT UP
A big battle looms on the horizon for Lubbock Christian, as they will welcome divisional rival West Texas A&M to the Rip Griffin Center for a top-10 matchup at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
