Martha Stewart has opened up about her time in prison in a magazine interview, saying she is "not bitter" about the stint behind bars.
The businesswoman and television personality served five months in federal prison in 2004.
"I knew I was strong going in and I was certainly stronger coming out," she told Harper's Bazaar. "It was a very serious happening in my life. I take it very seriously," she says. "I'm not bitter about it, but ... My daughter knows all the problems that resulted because of that. There's a lot."
Stewart, 79, was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction and making false statements to investigators, in connection with an investigation into insider trading. At the time, it was believed that her media empire would fail, but she staged a successful comeback.
Although she did not want to discuss prison in too much detail, Stewart said it had helped her form a bond with rapper Snoop Dogg. The "Drop It Like It's Hot" performer served time on drug charges in the 1990s.
In a joint interview with Snoop—real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr—on CBS' Sunday Morning in 2017, Stewart said: "Yes, that [conviction] helped because people knew how crazy and unfair ... all of that was."
She added: "And in Snoop's world, it gave me the street cred I was lacking."
Snoop praised his friend Stewart in a social media post about the news that rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine—real name Daniel Hernandez—had cooperated with prosecutors to reduce a prison sentence.
"As we watch Tekashi 69 (or whatever his name is) snitch on EVERYBODY, I invite you all to remember Martha Stewart snitched on NOT ONE soul during her trial," Snoop posted on Instagram in September 2019. "Baby girl kept it 10 toes down and ate that prison sentence by herself, like the true baddie she is."
He added: "That's my M.F. Home girl ... solid as a rocc."
One regret that Stewart does have from that period was not being able to host Saturday Night Live after her release in March 2005—when she lit up the media with the crochet grey poncho she wore on leaving the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, West Virginia.
"My only big regret that I can talk about is that Saturday Night Live asked me to host. My probation officer wouldn't give me the time," she told Harpers Bazaar. "That really pissed me off, because I would have loved to have hosted Saturday Night Live. I'd like that on my résumé."
