Considering how few of us want to be poisoned, it’s a minor miracle that we should ever eat anything that tastes at all like it has the potential to end us. But the quick-witted and curious among us know we will more than likely shuffle-off in a far more mundane manner than by any toxic slaying.

As grown-ups, having grappled with the intricacies of poison and toxicity, we are perhaps ready for something quietly subversive to give our cooking more ballast. So bring on the foods that are masquerading as poison, as well as tastes that indulge in the dark arts.
