For the first time this season, UND swept a Summit League weekend series as the Hawks -- behind a dominating stretch in the second half -- managed to down South Dakota 85-81 at The Betty.
“I don’t like Spiltsville much; it’s not a friendly pace,” said UND coach Paul Sather.
In five of the previous six Summit League weekends, UND split their two games. Against South Dakota, however, UND put together its best weekend of the season in beating the league-leading team.
UND improved to 7-7 in the conference and 8-15 overall while the Yotes dropped to 9-3 and 11-9. It was the third-straight loss for the Yotes as UND now has beaten South Dakota four straight times dating back to last season.
UND beat South Dakota 85-76 on Saturday before leading the Yotes for 33 minutes in taking its second-straight win -- one that saw the Hawks fire out to a 63-40 lead with 11:20 to play.
“It was a really good, collective team effort,” said Sather. “I really loved our resolve. I think that’s a pretty big word. I love the resolve this team has shown and it starts with our upperclassmen, guys like Bentiu Panoam and Filip Rebraca. They had a very good, a very focused weekend.”
Panoam, a senior who emerged as a catalyst midway through his final season, led UND with 22 points while Rebraca, who dodged foul trouble, ended with 17.
Rebraca’s monster one-hand slam with 19 seconds to go sealed the win, which looked totally secure 11 minutes earlier.
“It got a little messy at the end,” said Rebraca. “They started making some big-time shots to get them back in it. But we were still comfortably up.”
The Coyotes received another big-time performance from guard A.J. Plitzuweit, who finished with 34 points -- 31 in the second half. Stanley Umude added 15 as the Coyotes got to within four (79-75) with 44 seconds to go.
UND’s play in the first nine minutes of the second half may have been its best stretch of the season. The Hawks led 36-24 at the break but had everything working for the first nine minutes. The Hawks got defensive stops, hit 3-pointers and took care of the basketball, evidenced by only six turnovers for the game.
“Everything was clicking on offense and defense,” said Rebraca.
UND now heads to Omaha for two games next weekend to wrap up the regular season. A sweep could possibly give UND a top-half finish in the league as they prepare for the Summit League postseason tournament in Sioux Falls.
“I thought our two best games of the season we put together this weekend,” said Sather. “It's kind of fun when you can start playing good basketball late in the year.”
