Sweet Magnolias ended its first season on a shocking cliffhanger, as prom night ended in a horrific car accident.
There were plenty of twists and turns before the accident, with Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) getting a shock when her cheating ex-husband Bill Townsend (Chris Klein) asked her for another chance, fresh from her break-up with Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening). Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott) was also left stunned when Isaac Downey (Chris Medlin) suddenly asked her if she is his birth mother.
Things soon went downhill after a fight between the Townsend brothers at a prom after-party, and it wasn't long before Maddie received a call about an accident. Arriving at the scene, she discovered that it had been her younger son Kyle (Logan Allen) who was driving her older son Tyler's (Carson Rowland) car – and in the season's closing moments she discovered that there was also an unknown passenger in the car. But who is it?

With so many cliffhangers to pick up on next season, the Netflix drama's showrunner Sheryl J Anderson told Entertainment Weekly that the show's writers do know the identity of the mysterious car passenger and there are plenty of reasons why they've made that choice.
"I appreciate everyone's eagerness to learn who's in the car. All I can share is that the writers put a lot of thought into who's in the car, and we looked forward to the opportunity to let y'all know who it is," she said.
"We know the answers to all the questions that we asked, including who the passenger is. We didn't do anything for shock value, we wanted to find an organic end to the season that was climactic because that's how you should end the season.
"It's organic in terms of all of our characters, the journeys that they've been on over the course of the season and, if we're fortunate enough to have a second season, questions that we'd be eager and excited to explore. How the events of that night propel everybody forward.
"We genuinely wanted to leave people with questions to ponder until we can come back together again."

Hinting that the potential relationship between Helen Decatur (Heather Headley) and Erik Whitley (Dion Johnstone) won't be smooth – despite the fact that she is "thrilled that people are rooting for them to get together" – Anderson also suggested that Noreen Fitzgibbons (Jamie Lynn Spears) could make a return one day because "no one in Serenity is beyond redemption".
Although a second season hasn't been officially commissioned yet, Anderson said that the writing team have plenty of ideas for how to continue the show, not least answering all those questions from the season one finale.
"It is absolutely our intention that season 2 will answer questions, but, I've got to warn you, there will be new questions, too," she said. "I would hope viewers will be just as invested in the answers to the new set of questions and in the further growth of the citizens of Serenity that you've come to love.
"What I'd like to say to viewers is we so appreciate the passion and the investments. We really did not mean to upset anybody, we just wanted to leave you with questions that you can ponder, that you can discuss in your own Margaritas night, that you can mull over while we're waiting and hoping to hear about a season 2."
