Last week’s results

The long slog of over 50 starting second basemen was the subject last week, and results were a bit mixed. Though at an average score of 38%, they were slightly up on the first-base number. Four men were recorded in over 90% of attempts, and you can probably guess who they were: in descending order, Ketel Marte, Aaron Hill, Orlando Hudson and Kelly Johnson. At the other end of the spectrum is poor Damion Easley, whose time at shortstop was remembered by just one person (and since it was last names only, we can’t even blame the pesky Damion/Damien thing!). Easley actually made four starts there, which is more than ten other players, all of whom were recalled by at least three people.

This week’s quiz

Considerably fewer names to remember this week. A mere 38 men have started as short for the Diamondbacks, so this should be a little easier than the chonkers of last year. But there is, as usual, a name that I found myself having to check to confirm the data was right, because he’s not exactly a name you’d associate with the position. Though he did play it a lot, early in his career - for the first two major-league seasons, more than the position for which he’s known here. But I confirmed he did start one game at short. The D-backs lost it 9-0, which may explain why the experiment was not tried again, though the player in question didn’t appear to have made any errors.
