Syracuse, N.Y. -- Heavy lake effect snow could blanket sections of Upstate New York today and Saturday morning, and all of Upstate will endure the coldest weekend of the winter so far.

A fast-moving clipper system is also expected to create snow squalls and whiteout conditions this afternoon, the National Weather Service said.

Winter weather alerts are in place for Tug Hill and the Thruway corridor from Rochester to Utica. Several inches of snow could fall on Tug Hill this morning, when the winds shift and bring the snow farther south into Central New York.

Syracuse could see 9 inches by Saturday evening, with the heaviest snow falling just after dark tonight and lighter snow continuing through the day Saturday. That would make a small dent in Syracuse’s snow debt this season. The city has recorded 25.1 inches, about 40 inches less than normal through Jan. 21.

Winter weather advisories are in place from 1 p.m. today until 1 p.m. Saturday for Monroe, Wayne, Cayuga, Onondaga, Madison and Oneida counties. Four to 8 inches of snow could fall in those areas, with the potential for more on hilltops.

Wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph could blow snow around and reduce visibility.

“Travel could be very difficult,” the advisory said. “Slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.”

Bitter wind chills in Upstate New York

Wind chills could dip below zero across Upstate New York early Saturday and Sunday morning, making for the coldest weekend yet this winter.

Temperatures won’t approach freezing all weekend, with highs in the 20s or even teens across much of Upstate. Low temperatures could fall into the single digits Saturday and Sunday morning, and winds will make it feel below zero.

Cold weather continues into next week, with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens through the work week.
