HERKIMER — A bus driver in Herkimer County is accused of trying to sexually coerce a 14-year-old girl on his bus, according to law enforcement officials.
Village police said Colby Sweet, 59, of Ilion, started making inappropriate comments to a 14-year-old girl on his school bus in mid-December. Police said the girl was the last passenger on the bus, and when Sweet was alone with her at the end of his run, he would regularly stop the bus on the side of the road to be with the girl.
Police said Sweet would give the girl gifts and express his admiration for her. Police said this happened on multiple occasions, and Sweet eventually began touching the girl inappropriately. Police said Sweet hugged the girl and rubbed her body, and asked her to kiss him.
The authorities were contacted by a parent on Jan. 21 and Sweet was taken into custody. He drove for the Birnie Bus Co., authorities said.
Sweet is charged with one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, police stated. He was arraigned in court and was released on his own recognizance. Authorities said the investigation is continuing and additional charges are possible.
An order of protection was filed against Sweet on behalf of the child.
