WILMINGTON — Sweet D’s Cuisine’s new croissant-focused menu is full of baked treats, sure to satisfy many a sweet tooth.

The new family-run bakery subs donuts for croissants, some filled, some glazed, (some filled and glazed), all baked fresh daily in-house.

“You can’t eat just one, they’re like Lay’s potato chips,” co-owner Delia ‘Sweet D’ Dickey said. “Before you know it, you buy a dozen, you eat one. Next thing you know you’re grabbing for the second one, you look down, you ate just about eight of them. Right or wrong — it’s that good.”

Dickey previously ran The Dairy Bar off Carolina Beach Road in the 70s and more recently, a flower business off Princess Place. Her family has always had a love for cooking and she has dreamed of opening a bakery.

“We have that passion for dibbin’ and dabbin’ and mixin’ and stuff,” Dickey said of her family’s creativity in the kitchen. Lighter than donuts, Dickey said the new menu’s focus on croissants is based on the widespread appeal of the flaky pastry.

“Croissants are easy. They’re light. They’re delicious,” she said.

Besides croissants, Sweet D’s features cookies, pies, mini pies, cakes, dipped strawberries, cupcakes, milkshakes, macaroons, and more. The bakery even has gluten-free, soy-free, and dairy-free options.

With coffee from Java Estate out of Holly Ridge and Chuck’s Homemade Ice Cream out of Southport, co-owner Brian Dickey said the bakery is sourcing as many local ingredients as they can.

“We try to make everything local, work with local companies, work with local people,” he said.

As a minister, one of Dickey’s passions is mentoring students, and those dealing with criminal pasts or addictive behavior. He’s hired several employees through his personal cleaning business and the new bakery through LINC, a local program that aims to reduce recidivism and connect post-release offenders with jobs.

Since opening Aug. 1, Dickey said the family-friendly bakery has had a steady stream of new customers. “We didn’t expect it to be like this. We thought we’d be able to coast a little bit. But as soon as we opened the doors it’s been nonstop. The door’s literally falling off every now and then — the door will literally come off the hinge,” he said.

A tough time for restaurants everywhere, Delia said Sweet D’s opening hasn’t yet been negatively impacted by Covid-19. “People have told us that we were brave to open during Covid,” she said.

“And they told us that this place, nothing ever succeeded here. They said it was cursed,” Brian added. “It’s just they hadn’t put the right thing in,” Delia said.

Sweet D’s Cuisine is open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on 2321 S. 17th Street, near New Hanover Regional Medical Center.
