How Sancho saga has managed to spark bitter Dortmund and Bayern war of words - United In Focus - Manchester United FC News

Manchester United’s ongoing pursuit of Jadon Sancho is making big headlines, and in Germany it has set off a war of words between the country’s two top clubs.

United are attempting to sign Sancho, with BILD reporting earlier this week that the Red Devils are considering a payment of £108 million in installments.

Dortmund are demanding a high price and are expected to eventually cash in once United present an acceptable offer.

Their tendency to sell off star players was mocked this week by reigning champions and rivals Bayern Munich, with honorary president Uli Hoeness calling out Dortmund’s selling policy as a reason for their lack of title success.

Hoeness was quoted by NTV: “How is a player supposed to soak up a club’s DNA one hundred percent when he feels he is a sales item? That doesn’t exist at FC Bayern.”

Dortmund have previously cashed in on Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for big prices, and previously to United with Shinji Kagawa and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. They also lost Robert Lewandowski to Bayern on a free transfer.

Stinging response

To say Hoeness’ words did not go down well at Dortmund was an understatement.

CEO Hans-Joakim Watzke hit back, saying, “I find the statements pretty arrogant,” before making the point that life is far easier for Bayern with ‘250 million euros more in your pocket every year.”

He went on: “Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and I have been trying for years to ensure that the largest German clubs maintain a respectful relationship with one another. I think it’s a shame that people try to do this at regular intervals to infiltrate.”

NTV report Bayern’s frustration at missing out on Jude Bellingham to Dortmund, and claim they also tried to sign Jadon Sancho back when he made clear his desire to leave City.

Where does this leave United?

Hoeness might have been better keeping quiet until after Dortmund sell Sancho, weakening their team.

There is a small chance now that Dortmund become extra determined to dig in and keep hold of Sancho just to prove a point.

Yet as Watzke points out, it is about money, and Bayern have far more than Dortmund do.

If there is a mega-offer from United, then it will be very tough for the German side to turn down in this financial climate, even if it means Dortmund in the process prove their rivals right.
