Why is Sweet Caroline an England chant?
While it may seem odd for an American pop hit to become an unofficial anthem for England, football teams regularly borrow songs from other countries.
The song is not normally associated with England. But after their victory against Germany in the last 16 round DJ Tony Perry opted to play it instead of England anthem Fat Les’ Vindaloo and received a belting response from the crowd.
After the match, Southgate said: “You can’t beat a bit of Neil Diamond.
“It’s just a really joyous song, I think, that brings people together.”
Do other sports fans also sing it?
In England, the song has been associated with boxing and cricket matches for years.
Its history in sports, however, stems from across the Atlantic.
It is claimed that during a baseball game at the Red Sox’s Fenway Park stadium in 1997, Amy Tobey, an employee in charge of ball-park music, played ‘Sweet Caroline’ because someone she knew had just had a baby named Caroline.
In 2013, on the first baseball game back at Fenway Park following the Boston Marathon bombings, Diamond also performed the song live to the crowd.
