Bitter Sweet Symphony - Philadelphia Sports Nation

This can’t seriously be happening again to the Eagles organization. A little over four months since the Wentz-Eagles breakup took place and somehow the headline is still the same; Wentz injured, Eagles weep. The constant knock on Wentz for his duration in Philadelphia was questioning his ability to stay healthy. Rightfully so after the laundry list of injuries Wentz has endured since his collegiate career. Whether you were happy or sad to see Wentz go to Indianapolis, Eagles nation was collectively able to breath a sign of relief being able to put him in the rear-view mirror.

Except they weren’t. And now another Wentz injury has serious implications for the Eagles without him even being on the roster. Although the severity remains unknown, a “twinge” in Wentz’s foot has cast a dark cloud over the Colts and leaves Eagles fans shaking their heads. Being out indefinitely with a potential need for surgery a little over a month until the season kicks off all but guarantees the Colts conditional pick will result in a second round designation. The fun of saying the Eagles have three first-round picks next year appears to be over.

A much needed heat check for Eagles fans after a strong off-season. In all reality, the conditional pick converting to a second-round pick should have been the expectation. But not even getting to preseason before a story like this breaks is just cruel. For the conditional pick to become a first-rounder, Wentz needs to play a minimum 70% of offensive snaps. Also dependent on the Colts making the playoffs, or the percentage is increased to 75%. Either way, this approximates to Wentz needing to play at least 12 games of the new 17 game season.

For the Colts, they were a great team even with an aged Phillip Rivers at the helm last year. With an AFC South title and Super Bowl run on their mind, Wentz appeared to be the piece that would take the Colts over the hump. The Colts have already signed Brett Hundley, but I believe a more substantial upgrade would need to happen should Wentz be out an extended amount of time. Perhaps a Nick Foles type of player? Kidding.

Although it is no fairy tale ending, there is no better fitting ending than a Wentz injury biting the Eagles one last time. Well played football gods, thanks for the slice of humble pie before week 1.
