WHITEHALL, MI – A new candy store brings unique treats and an air of nostalgia to downtown Whitehall.

Candy Beach, 108 W Colby St., is stocked with a broad selection of retro sweets, old fashioned sodas, allergy-friendly snacks and healthy options.

Owners Kara Near and Jesse Bien opened the candy shop on July 24 to offer a “fun, happy environment” for local families.

The couple also own KAC Boat Rentals in Whitehall and bought the downtown building at the end of 2019. Near said they tossed around ideas about what kind of business to open and eventually landed on a candy shop.

“This just feels like a happy place to buy candy — feels like candy, feels sweet. Who doesn’t love a candy store,” she said?

Giant lollipops, bright packaging and full shelves greet customers at Candy Beach. A tall Pucker Powder tower lets kids make their own colorful pixie sticks for $2.99 to $5.99, depending on the size.

The couple, who grew up in Montague, want the store to be a stopping point for kids walking through downtown Whitehall.

“We’re looking for something fun and we’re always talking about the kids,” said Bien.

Jars brimming with small candies sell Double Bubble for 5 cents, Kool-Aid Candy for 10 cents and Blow Pops for 25 cents each. Bien said the penny candies give kids the opportunity to count their change and learn some math.

Candy Beach also caters to people with a sweet tooth who might have health restrictions. A selection of dried fruit, like goji berries, mango and hibiscus, and organic candies provide a healthier alternative.

“I love being in there and see people come through. Listening to some of the conversations some of these kids have, that’s probably the best part,” said Near. “Watching people get excited about things they don’t see very often.”

Michigan-made and local products, like Hey Sugar Cotton Candy and Dave’s Sweet Tooth toffee, are also available.

Near and Bien plan to keep growing the shop, adding a shaved ice machine and hosting events for the community like the Halloween “creepy candy walk” held last year.

A sign at the store says: “We’re going to take things slow, please be patient as we grow.”

Candy Beach is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Sunday. The business can be reached at 231-894-0637. More information can also be found on the store’s Facebook page here.
