Kari Santos runs Sweet Me Off My Feet bakery from her home and continues to gain accolades for her stunning and delicious baked goods. This is the second year Sweet Me Off My Feet has been awarded the Hulafrog award for most loved cakes and cupcakes. Hulafrog gives out its "most loved" awards annually.
“The Hulafrog award was really fun,” Santos said. “It’s specifically parents voting, so it was really great to know that parents are enjoying my stuff. It’s amazing to know that people are appreciating my work.”
Santos started her business in 2015 after she had been laid off from her insurance job of 14 years.
“I was wondering what to do while looking for work. All my friends and family told me to go and make some cakes,” Santos said. “Baking was always something I did on the side, and I took the leap of faith to do it full-time after COVID in 2020. As restrictions continue to be lifted, everyone wants to have a party, so business has been surprisingly good this year. I’m very happy about it.”
Santos’ favorite flavor?
“I’m really fond of my salted caramel buttercream frosting,” she said. “A wedding order requested something salted caramel flavored and I came up with the frosting idea. Ever since then, I think that’s been my favorite frosting. It’s different, fluffy and flavorful.”
Buttercream frosted sugar cookies are another one of her specialties.

“If you were to get a decorated frosted cookie, most of the time they’re done in royal icing," Santos said. "But, I find most people tend to prefer the flavor of buttercream over royal icing. So, I try to do as much as I can in that actual frosting.”
In addition, if you dislike fondant, Santos is your baker.
“I don’t work with fondant on cakes. But, I love the challenge of seeing what I can do in buttercream that most bakers would do in fondant,” she said.
Santos receives many orders for character cakes — which take the longest at five to six hours from start to finish. More straightforward cakes, like a German chocolate, can be put together in 45 minutes.
“I love seeing the smile on a customer’s face when they pick up their order,” Santos said. “While it’s a work of art and labor of love for me, it’s fun to see that they’re going to take it and enjoy it, too.”
The bakery’s name, which includes a pun, was thought of by Santos’ friend.
“I was sitting around with my friend and we were trying to think of a name. ‘Kari’s Cakes’ just seemed so boring. We tossed around the idea of ‘Bake My Day’ and, soon enough, my friend came up with ‘Sweet Me Off My Feet’, and I fell in love with it,” she said.
As for the future, in a handful of years Santos would probably consider opening a storefront here in Midland. For now, all orders are custom and baked at her home. In addition, a bakery food truck could be in store.
“I had another friend who mentioned I should consider doing a bakery food truck. How fun would that be?” Santos said. “If someone is getting a taco from another food truck, I could provide dessert to finish it off with!”
