Jul. 5—PELLA — The Dutch played their third consecutive one-run game on Friday but after winning the first two, they were on the wrong side of a nail-bitter as they fell 1-0 to Indianola.
Both teams sent out talented pitchers as they both dominated the majority of the game.
For Pella it was Jason Knox getting the ball. He was able to escape potential damage in the third inning with Indianola loading up the bases with two outs. Knox would get the Indian's cleanup hitter Jack Strong to fly out to left to get out of the inning.
Knox continued to groove until the sixth inning. Strong would come back with a one-out single to get things started. Then a Pella error would put runners on the corners with Indianola's Mark Pepper beating out a 6-4-3 double play at first, allowing Strong to score from third and give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
The Dutch were going up against Indianola's Casey Stecker, who was on cruise control for most of the game. Stecker allowed just four hits all night with six strikeouts and retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced.
Pella would eye a late rally in the seventh with back-to-back singles by Nick DeJong and Ryan Mace putting the tying run on third and the winning run on first with no outs.
But Indianola would pull the Houdini by getting Knox to pop out to the catcher, striking out Josh Miller and Keegan Hansen grounding out to short to end the game at 1-0.
Knox took the loss despite a strong outing that saw him give up one unearned run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in seven innings of work.
DeJong and Mace had hits in the seventh while Aidan Pollock saw success at the plate going 2-for-2 with a double.
Pella (15-12) travels to Centerville (15-11) on Monday at 7:30 p.m. to start a tough week to finish the regular season.
