FLINT, MI — For Diane Rhines, owner of Sweet Afterthoughts in Burton, owning a bakery had long been a “heart’s desire.”
The Davison woman realized her dream the week of Christmas when she opened her bakery at 5518 E. Atherton Road, in the building formerly occupied by longtime Burton business Jablonski’s Bakers Corner.
Sweet Afterthoughts offers custom-made cakes and dessert buffets for special events, cupcakes, cake pops and more. Prior to opening her storefront, Rhines had been baking and selling desserts out of her home under Michigan’s Cottage Food Law.
“My grandma had taught me to bake years and years ago and I’ve just always had a knack for it because of what she’s taught me,” Rhines said. “She was a great baker.”
Rhines, who works with her daughter, Stephanie Bauer, said she prayed about opening a bakery and minutes later received a call from a friend that set everything in motion.
“That day that I said that prayer he happened to see the for-sale sign. So, like, literally 20 minutes later he calls me and was like ‘Hey, I found your bakery,’” she said. “It just worked out and they (the Jablonskis) have been wonderful to work with.”
Rhines said opening day at Sweet Afterthoughts was even busier than she expected. “The people and the city of Burton have been just amazing,” she said.
“Wow!! Just Wow!! The support we have received is unbelievable!! God is so good!” read a message to patrons posted on the Sweet Afterthoughts Facebook page the following day.
Rhines said customer favorites include her strawberry, cherry chip, and salted caramel cupcakes. Cake pops are hot sellers, too.
“Come and see our selection, it changes up every day,” she said.
Sweet Afterthoughts is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. It is closed on Sunday and Monday. Find Sweet Afterthoughts on Facebook to learn more.
