Sweet Treat of the Week: A hard seltzer for breakfast - MLive.com

gemblongsa.blogspot.com

Hard seltzers are some of the hottest cold beverages around, and breweries across Michigan are jumping right in, and brewing up their own unique versions. If you are looking for something new to serve at your next brunch, Breakfast Seltzer from Great America is a Michigan made option, with three distinctive flavor options.

“It’s been in the works for some time,” Dave Cicotte, Michigan market manager for Great America and Brew Detroit said. It’s been a pretty speedy process to roll these out from concept to getting them in packages and to market. We didn’t want to waste any time, and we didn’t want to, frankly, allow someone else to come out with this idea before we did, because we’ve been working so hard on them."

Breakfast Seltzer from Great America is our pick for Sweet Treat of the Week, a series highlighting people and products from around Michigan who are using Pioneer Sugar in their creations.

Check out our interview below with Dave Cicotte, where we discuss the incredible rise in popularity of the hard seltzer market, what sets Breakfast Seltzers apart, and two other high octane products coming out of Detroit.

Great America is the name of the company that is producing Breakfast Seltzer, and it’s a sister company to Brew Detroit. While this is their entry into the hard seltzer market, they wanted to do it separate from the Brew Detroit brand. The whole process from concept to on the shelves took about 10 months Cicotte said.

Breakfast Seltzer is available in a mixed 12 pack featuring three flavors, all based on classic morning beverages. The drinks have 100 calories, and only 2 net carbs per can, and 4.5% ABV.

Mimosa, bellini, and coffee are the current offerings, and Cicotte’s favorite is the mimosa, a classic brunch drink with orange and a bit of fizz. The bellini features notes of fresh peach, while the coffee, well, is coffee flavored, yet crystal clear. “It was an interesting process developing all of these flavors,” Cicotte said. “That was probably the most time that we took, to make sure we got these flavors right.”

The company starts off with a ‘neutral sugar base’ to make their products, which consists of sugar, yeast and water. They brew this base to a high concentrate ABV, which before anything is cut or flavored, comes in at about 18%. They then take it down to the right ABV depending on the product that they are making. Currently, Great America also makes a moonshine and a high ABV seltzer as well as the Breakfast Seltzers. Carbonation and flavoring then follows for the seltzers. “Each place has their own way of doing it,” Cicotte said.

What sets these seltzer’s apart are the flavors that Great America chose. There are few, to none, of these flavor combinations in seltzer form out there according to Cicotte. If you want to serve something interesting and new, that is also low calorie at your next brunch, give Breakfast Seltzer a try.
