With a grand jury failing to bring the anticipated charges against the police officers that killed Breonna Taylor in Louisville, Kentucky, Detroit Lions defensive end Trey Flowers believes that such a decision could lead to increased protests throughout the NFL.
While the NFL has seemingly changed its tune in regards to social and racial injustice to begin the 2020 campaign, Flowers still has a pretty bitter assessment of the state of the league moving forward.
It is also worth noting that Flowers made a point to mention that the Taylor grand jury ruling wasn’t a topic of discussion as a result of the Lions’ Wednesday team meeting.
“It could lead to whatever it leads to,” Flowers recently said, via the Detroit Free Press. “It’s just as far as what people feel and how people feel as far as what can be affected, so I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.”
Flowers and his Lions teammates notably led some incredibly moving protests in the wake of the shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin last month. The Lions canceled a day of practice in order to instead speak out about the issues of racial injustice and police brutality against the black community.
Unlike the lack of discussion surrounding Taylor and the corresponding grand jury decision, the murder of Blake was a topic of conversation for the Lions in a big way in August.
The responses from professional and amateur athletes after the failure to indict officers on murder charges will be followed, as NBA players, for example, had strong reactions to the news about the late Taylor on Wednesday.
