Battle over butter has taken the internet by storm. Recently, an advertisement of Amul butter ‘Not So Masoom’ (not so innocent) featuring Urmila Matondkar went viral. Associating an old advertisement with the recent upheaval around Kangana Ranaut and Urmila Matondkar’s heated spat, trollers posted the old ad on various social media platforms and it became viral in no time.
Amul Butter advertisements featuring Bollywood classics
The bollywood and butter affair isn’t new! Since ages, Amul butter packs have been designed to appeal to the masses and this is why most classic movie hoardings and packs have always been crafted with witty artworks, catchy tag lines and quirky cartoons resembling the recently released movies.
Coming back to the recent controversy, the ‘Not So Masoom’ ad was launched in 1995 around the release of Urmila Matondkar starrer 'Rangeela'. However, trollers tried to link the ad to the spat between the actresses.
The controversy and backing!
The matter came to limelight, when the advertisement was circulated on social media linking it to the controversy around Kangana Ranaut’s comment during a television interview where she allegedly called Urmila a ‘soft porn star.’
Things went so far that two leading Bollywood filmmakers, Anurag Kashyap and Ram Gopal Varma had to jump in to back Urmila and shut the trolls.
Ram Gopal Varma cleared the air and shared the ad in a tweet dated September 11 and wrote. “Amul hoarding after RANGEELA released in 1995.
Director Anurag Kashyap also tweeted about the ad and wrote, “If I am Not mistaken, this came out when ‘Rangeela’ released and not now. And it was based on the fact that Urmila was the child actor in ‘Masoom’. It was meant to be an appreciation. Now misused by trolls after the current scenario.”
“Actor and filmmaker Pooja Bhatt also tweeted @UrmilaMatondkar you are a legend. #Rangeela was a treat visually, emotionally and you raised the bar for all of us in so many ways. You left us all,co-actors and an entire generation of moviegoers awestruck! Sensuality & dignity.. two qualities you combined & embodied. Respect!”
Fact check!
The creators of the advertisement, Rahul Da Cunha also shared his views on a social media platform that the Amul hoarding was created back in 1995 around the release of Rangeela and had no relation to the recent spat.
This is not the first time trollers have dragged an old ad to grab attention. Well, it may seem distasteful to some in the current scenario but the classic and witty ads of the butter brand have surely been a treat for the eyes and palate since ages.
