Kanize Jackson had a corny sense of humor that made his mother laugh even when she didn’t feel like it.
“He was very sweet and kindhearted, always giving, loving and caring,” Meiko Jackson told the Citizen Times.
He was only 20, but Kanize Jackson was the “man of the house,” Meiko Jackson said, and he protected her and his three sisters. He loved his mother and she loved him, she said.
Jackson was killed in a shooting in West Asheville Aug. 5. His marks the ninth homicide death in 2020. As of midday Aug. 10, there have been no arrest in his case.

Jackson's family remembers him as outgoing, sweet, silly and brave. They say he had a passion and talent for music. He did well in school and had great potential, they said.
'The sweetest and most silliest person'
"He was kind to everyone he met," said Jackson's sister, Hali Ferguson. "He had a warm smile that was as bright as the sun. Kanize was very humble and down to earth. He took care of those he loved. He had a deep passion and gratitude for life."
Ferguson said her brother was "the sweetest and most silliest person you would ever meet."
“He would always tell jokes to make people laugh," she said. "A lot of people loved and knew him.”
She said she had a “loving and understanding” relationship withJackson.
“We have been through a lot together,” she said. “We laughed together, cried together and sang together.”
Meiko Jackson said her son was her “everything” and his father’s, too. She believes he is content in paradise now, but she said she doesn't know how she will make it through this loss.
“It’s like a nightmare that I can’t wake up from," she said.
She longs to see her son’s smile again and to have Jackson “walk back through the door." She knows holidays will be a struggle. And she's left questioning how a thing like this could happen.
“How could someone want to take such a gifted, loving and kind, understanding soul so easy and heartlessly?” she asked.
Meiko Jackson said her son will be "deeply and truly missed."
Jackson's funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Aug. 13 in the chapel of Ray Funeral & Cremation Service.
