HAMPTON TOWNSHIP, MI – As soon as Doug Adams and Morley Fraser found out they were in the same flight, the barbs started to fly.
And they didn’t stop flying until the very end as the Third Flight of the 2020 Bay County Golf Championship came down to the last putt of the last hole between the brothers-in-law.
“Oh yes, there was a lot of give-and-take between us,” Adams said.
Adams would get the last word, outdueling Fraser in Sunday’s nine-hole playoff by a single stroke. They posted matching scorecards in Saturday’s opening round of the 96th annual event, shooting 38 on the front nine and 39 on the back for 77.
When heavy rains hit Bay County Golf Course on Sunday, the Second, Third and Fourth Flights were cancelled and any co-leaders were brought back for a playoff.
“When we got the call that we were doing a playoff, Morley sent me a text that said ‘Mano a mano,’” Adams said. “I said ‘Bring it on.’”
The Adams family has been a fixture on the local golf scene for decades. Doug’s father, Rod, won the First Flight title the first time the event was played at Bay County in 1968. Doug’s sister Susan was an 11-time champion at the Bay City Country Club and added the Women’s Bay County Championship crown in 2011.
When Susan married Fraser last summer, the family had a new player. Fraser has elevated game since joining the family – and since retiring as vice principal and head football coach at Bay City Central.
He came into this year’s tournament ready for a run at the Third Flight title, and appeared even more determined once he discovered Doug was in the Third Flight as well.
“He’s gotten very good. He plays six days a week in Florida now and likes to brag about it,” said Doug, a 62-year-old financial planner. “He comes back here and he’s already peaking – maybe peaking too early.”
The connection made for a unique playoff Sunday as they were able to trade the usual jabs they swap while playing together at least once a week through the summer. Fraser owned a one-shot lead heading into the par-3 No. 9 hole, but knows the game isn’t over until it’s over.
His tee shot sailed into the trees and he was forced to scramble for a double-bogey. That left the door open for Adams, who hit his tee shot just short of the green, chipped up to 5 feet then sank the putt for the win.
The victory is the second career flight championship for Adams, who also won the Third Flight in 2013.
Gene Rhode, Brian Sizick and Andrew Stewart all finished one stroke back, just missing out on a chance to join the playoff. Rhode is a legend of the Senior Bay County Championship, where he has won the overall crown six times and the Super Senior division five times.
Sizick has been ever-so-close to a breakthrough title, including last year’s second-place finish. Stewart is a regular in the tournament who is hungry for his first crown.
