Sweet Magnolias is the newest Netflix sensation that’s sweeping the nation. The sweet and sassy Southern series is based on a series of novels by Sherryl Woods and it has a truly stacked cast. If you’ve been waiting to see Chris Klein and Jamie Lynn Spears team-up, now is your chance!
But the show is more than its fantastic cast. The town of Serenity, South Carolina is just as much a series lead as Maddie, Dana Sue, and Helen. The show really captures what it feels like to live in a small Southern town, so much so that it makes you wonder if Serenity really exists. It sure seems like it!
Apologies for bursting your bubble, but Serenity is a fictional town—but the show really did film in a place that legitimately has that easy, breezy vibe! So, where was Sweet Magnolias filmed and, more importantly, can you visit once we’re all allowed to travel again?
Where was Sweet Magnolias filmed? What is the Sweet Magnolias Netflix filming location?
The town of Serenity is actually Covington, Georgia. The Georgia city was very excited about hosting the show, as you can tell by the write-up on the Covington chamber of commerce website. This is hardly the first TV series that was filmed in Covington, either. The town was the home of The Vampire Diaries during that show’s 8-season run, where it transformed into Mystic Falls. Fans of the Vampire Diaries will recognize some of the locations in Sweet Magnolias, particularly the Mystic Grill. That landmark was turned into Sullivan’s for the new Netflix show.
The spa that’s at the heart of the series (and also at the top of this page) is actually the the law office of Tommy Craig, which is a real law office with a real website. Don’t worry: the interiors of the spa-to-be were all shot on a soundstage. They didn’t tear up Tommy Craig’s office!
The Cinemaholic also noted that Henry County Middle School in McDonough, Georgia doubled as the high school seen in Sweet Magnolias.
The show started filming in July 2019, as evidenced by write-ups in Atlanta magazine and Stomp and Stammer. Only time will tell if Sweet Magnolias will make as big of a mark on Covington as The Vampire Diaries. There’s definitely enough drama in Serenity to last 8 seasons, but we have to get a Season 2 first!
