Reigning World of Outlaws champion Brad Sweet regained whatever momentum he might have lost due to the coronavirus shutdown with a statement win in Night One of the Great Lakes Shootout at the Jackson Motorplex.
Sweet said prior the resumption of the World of Outlaws season at Knoxville Raceway last week that it felt like the start of a new season and that his 16-win season in 2019 nor his season-opening DIRTcar Nationals championship meant nothing.
As if validating the sentiment, he finished an uncharacteristic ninth at the Sprint Car Capital of the World and lost the championship lead to Logan Schuchart.
On Friday night, he posted the second quickest time in his qualifying group, finished second to Bill Balog in his heat and stormed from sixth-to-second in the main event, passing Sheldon Haudenschild with seven to go before checking out with the top spot.
The Great Lakes Shootout was an open race that did not pay points to any touring division.
"We’ve had a lot of good runs here at Jackson, we really love this place," Sweet said on the SpeedShiftTV broadcast. "Nice to be back on top after last weekend at Knoxville when we were a little off."
Haudenschild appeared to be in control but slid up the track in the exit of Turn 4 while in lap traffic and was unable to hold off The Big Cat.
Sweet capitalized on a similar mistake in lap traffic to get by Donny Schatz for second.
The reigning champ was both fortunate but efficient in traffic.
"It was lucky to get a couple of breaks in lapped traffic and made a couple of good moves to get into second. Sheldon was setting a good pace," Sweet said. "I think he was not sure where to be with the rubber. He just made one small mistake and luckily we were there to capitalize."
Haudenschild agreed that the changing track conditions and lap traffic cost at the end, but conceded it was a good day as he had previously struggled at the Jackson County Fairgrounds.
"I got out front early and felt good when the track was normal, slick and a little bit dirty," Haudenschild said. "Definitely have confidence. The car was good all night … Finally, to get a good finish here, that felt really good."
The victory was the fifth of the season for Sweet, following two at the DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park in February.
Donny Schatz and Ian Madsen won the pair of pole dashes and started the main event on the front row. Schatz led the first 11 laps but Haudenschild picked him off when the Tony Stewart Racing No. 14 jumped the cushion upon approaching lap traffic in Turn 2.
During that battle, Sweet had moved into the top-three and slowly reeled-in Haudenschild. Upon taking the lead, Sweet moved to the bottom of the racetrack to drive under lapped traffic.
Schatz held onto third with Kasey Kahne finishing fourth ahead of Ian Madsen as the top-five. Sweet earned $5,000 for his efforts on Friday with a $7,000-to-win main event scheduled for Saturday afternoon.
"It’s always confidence to win and we have a lot of confidence at this racetrack just based on the performances that we’ve had in the past," Sweet said. "We’re just having fun. We just want to get back in race shape, gelling with the race team and Jackson putting on a show with no fans, obviously it’s tough. Hopefully, a lot of viewers tuned in to help make it all possible. Hopefully for us we can have another solid night and get ready for our Outlaw season"
Kyle Larson finished 11th in his second Sprint Car race weekend in a row in the aftermath of his dismissal from the Chip Ganassi Racing NASCAR team. Tony Stewart finished 14th after starting 23rd and having to race into the main event from his B Main.
There was also the mystery of a participant named Tony Knight, who surprisingly won the third heat against the likes of Haudenschild, Larson, Brooke Tatnell and Jody Rosenboom, despite having discernible resume.
It became apparent that Knight was Scotty Thiel, racing under an assumed name for reason not yet clear.
But the gig was up the moment "Knight" won his heat and was forced to appear on the PPV broadcast to redraw his starting position in his pole shuffle.
Despite his best efforts, Knight was unable to mask his real identity.
He finished 13th in the main event.
