'Sweet Magnolias' Fans Have the Wildest Theories About Who Was in the Car Accident With Kyle - GoodHousekeeping.com

  • Sweet Magnolias, starring JoAnna Garcia, Brooke Elliot, and Heather Headley, debuted on Netflix on May 19.
  • The first season ends with a major cliffhanger: Kyle, played by Logan Allen, gets in a terrible car accident — and he's not the only one in the car. The question: who's in the car with him?
  • Fans are begging for answers and, more importantly, a second season to tie up loose ends.

At first, Netflix's Sweet Magnolias gives off a warm-fuzzy vibe similar to Hallmark movies and shows like Gilmore Girls. That is, until you watch the final moments of the final episode.

The action-packed finale covers all the bases: The three main characters —Maddie Townsend (played by Joanna Garcia), Dana Sue (played by Brooke Elliot), and Helen (played by Heather Headley) all have major decisions to make about their various romantic and professional relationships, both past and present.

But it's not just about the adults in Serenity. It happens to be prom night, and as luck would have it, tensions rise between Tyler "Ty" (played by Carson Rowland) and his teammate Jackson at the after-party. Kyle (played by Logan Allen) steps in to defend his brother, but Ty makes it clear that he doesn't want his little brother to come to his rescue. This outburst causes Kyle to run off and ultimately, speed away in Ty's brand-new car.

Minutes later, Maddie finds out that her son was in a car accident. Kyle is pulled out on a stretcher, and is airlifted the hospital because he was found unconscious at the scene. Just before the episode ends (the season finale, mind you!), the police break more bad news: there was a passenger in the car with Kyle, but they can't make out who it is.

Fans took to Twitter to speculate who could've possibly been in the car with Kyle.

The obvious choice seems to be Nellie (played by Simone Lockhart). Earlier in the episode, Kyle and Nellie bond over video games, and decide to skip prom to veg out on the couch together.

One eagle-eyed fan pointed out that Nellie was wearing sneakers, which means she was more likely to catch up to Kyle than the other prom-goers in dresses, tuxedos, and heels.

Even JoAnna, who swears that showrunner Sheryl Anderson is keeping the entire cast in the dark, thinks Nellie is a safe bet. "I definitely think there’s a chance that it’s Nellie, and Annie would be my other best guess, but I don’t know. And it’s funny, I’ve begged Sheryl to tell us and she said I’m not even telling Netflix until we get a season two," she told AfterBuzzTV.

Like Joanna implied, there's also a strong chance that Annie, one of Kyle's closest friends, could've been in the passenger seat. Carson, who plays Ty on the show, agrees: "My reaction when it first happened… I think it’s me. But obviously, Anneliese (who plays Annie) thinks it’s her. We have no idea, and I guess we’ll just have to wait and pray for season 2," he explained to Hollywood Life.

But Ty isn't completely off limits. It's possible that he hopped in the car with his brother to calm him down after their argument ... but he was too late. Given Ty's recent news about his professional baseball career, fans are hoping that this isn't the case.

One fan, in particular, thinks it's possible that the passenger wasn't another teen from the party. In fact, they're guessing that Kyle called his dad's ex-girlfriend Noreen (played by Jamie Lynn Spears), and she came to his rescue. And while this is by far the wildest theory out there, it still seems plausible.

Since the show is based off a book series by the same name, some may assume that the answers are in print. Since the show strays from the original storyline, your best bet is to just patiently wait for season 2, if and when Netflix decides to renew the show. At this point, it's unclear if the show will return, but Anderson told The Sun that she's "anxious to [see the show] continue on," especially because she doesn't want fans to "feel cheated" about the cliffhanger ending.
