WARNING: Spoilers for Sweet Magnolias season 1.

Now streaming on NetflixSweet Magnolias season 1 ends with Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) torn between ex-husband Bill (Chris Klein) and a charming Serenity local named Cal Maddox (Justin Bruening), but neither seem to be ideal romantic matches. Plus, the final cliffhanger reveals that Maddie has more immediate problems upon learning that her teenage son Kyle (Logan Allen) was involved in a car accident, and that her other son Ty (Carson Rowland) could still be trapped in the passenger seat. Moving forward, the car crash aftermath will undoubtedly lead Maddie back to Bill, if only briefly. Sweet Magnolias season 1 released on Netflix in May 2020.

On the surface, Sweet Magnolias season 1 centers primarily on three female best friends: Maddie, Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley). They're all strong independent women, and have regular meetings to chat about life while consuming margaritas. But Sweet Magnolias season 1 isn't fundamentally about the three female protagonists moving on from flawed relationships with male partners, but rather about the journey of living in their particular South Carolina community in the American South. It's a story about empathy and understanding, about forgiveness and acceptance. As such, the character themes in Sweet Magnolias season 1 on Netflix mirror real-life issues for many, as it's not always so easy to simply keep calm and move on. Relationships are more complex than a meme tagline.

Sweet Magnolias season 1 on Netflix includes strong thematic motifs that connect with each character. For example, chef Dana Sue represents consistency; she's the town rock and a strong role model for daughter Annie (Anneliese Judge). Then again, she's not perfect and has some personal issues to resolve, certainly with her estranged husband, Ronnie (Brandon Quinn). As for Helen, she represents perseverance, evidenced by her character arc with emotionally distant partner Ryan Wingate (Michael Shenefelt) and the seemingly pure-hearted chef Erik Whitley (Dion Johnstone). These women aren't defined by single concepts, but the character motifs do indeed drive the narrative. Here's what Maddie, a symbol of forgiveness, should do in Sweet Magnolias season 2 on Netflix.

Why Maddie Should Choose Bill

At the present moment, Maddie should choose Bill because she needs him more than ever, and he's also expressed genuine regret about cheating on her with Noreen Fitzgibbons (Jamie Lynn Spears). If Sweet Magnolias on Netflix is partially about second chances and Maddie thematically represents forgiveness, then she'll most likely welcome Bill back to see if anything has changed, and to see if his emotional intelligence has improved.

To be clear, Maddie doesn't need Bill whatsoever. Still, she'll want him nearby for support after Kyle's accident. After a marriage and three kids, Maddie and Bill understand the importance of compromise. Bill may be gone by the end of Sweet Magnolias season 2, but expect him to transform into a more honorable and accountable character in the next batch of episodes.

Why Maddie Shouldn't Choose Cal

Cal is the Shiny New Car of Sweet Magnolias season 1. He looks good, and he's a smooth operator, but can also quickly spiral out of control and crash hard. In fact, he could even be Kyle's mysterious passenger; someone who tried to help the Townsends but causes even more problems (which would make Maddie's decision much easier).

Maddie is naturally drawn to Cal after divorcing Bill, but she's smart enough to understand that he's somewhat of an emotionally hollow individual. Plus, Cal even upset Maddie's son Ty upon having a baseball scout friend pretend, or imply, that the kid has Major League Baseball talent. Cal needs to go. It's just a matter of how the showrunners want to write him off in Sweet Magnolias season 2 on Netflix.

What Maddie Will Do

Sweet Magnolias season 2 on Netflix will begin with Maddie choosing Bill over Cal. But that doesn't mean that she'll stay with Bill, of course. Maddie just needs to work through her conflict a little more, as there's reason to believe that Bill has matured after being called out by Noreen, and there's also now strong evidence (the car accident) to support the idea that Maddie and the kids will need and want Bill at home. At Bill's age, though, how much can he really change? Like Cal, he's a smooth talker, but having a slow drawl and a big smile doesn't necessarily make him a good man. Still, perhaps Maddie recognizes that Bill, for all his flaws, may indeed be a good man at heart.
