The Sweet Stop on Third opened Tuesday in Beaver, selling cookies, brownies, frozen desserts and other sweets.

BEAVER -- There’s sweet news stirring in downtown Beaver.

The Sweet Stop on Third opened Tuesday, offering cookies, brownies, frozen desserts and other sweets.

Taking over the former storefront of Sincerely Yogurt, at 568 Third St., the business eventually will offer seating for 16 and a frozen yogurt and soft-serve sundae bar.

For now, social distancing procedures are in effect, meaning no sit-down customers, while ice cream and yogurt is served by employees as patrons keep a safe distance apart.

“We’re taking all the precautions,” said Kirk McConnell, who owns the shop with his wife, Bethany.

They went to high school together, but their friendship-turned-romance didn’t bloom until they began working at Custard’s First Stand, a frozen custard stand off Camp Horne Road in Allegheny County’s North Hills. After working there for years, Kirk bought the business, which he and Bethany still run.

Opportunity came knocking when Kirk met the owner of the Sincerely Yogurt shop in Beaver, who was looking to sell.

“He told me to come check out Beaver,” McConnell said, recalling that he paid his first visit the same day as the Hot Summer Nights Car Cruise, one of the busiest days of the year in the borough.

“It took me 40 minutes to find a parking space,” McConnell said.

He was struck by the friendliness of the people and recognized the opportunity of a thriving downtown where a storefront can operate year round. Custard stands, by contrast, have about a seven-month window in western Pennsylvania.

So the McConnell’s rolled the dice and decided to open a sweets store in Beaver.

The sale was completed March 1, but the April grand opening got postponed as everyone hunkered down in quarantine mode.

“We sat on it for a month and then decided to have a makeshift, mock opening to pay the bills,” McConnell said. “So it’s a different plan, but it gives us a chance to be trying out and testing different products.”

Nearly a dozen styles of cookies, such as oatmeal raisin, snicker doodle, peanut butter, sugar sparkle and chocolate chip, are available.

Sweet Stop on Third offers Good L'Oven cookie shop products.

“We have worked with them for a few years now at Custard's to make cookie ice cream sandwiches,” Bethany said. “We offer a variety of cookies, brownies, chocolates and frozen novelties.”

Another specialty is twisted brownies -- cookie dough topped with brownie stuffed in the middle with an Oreo -- from Hookies Cookies. There’s also Moose Track cookies and Berries and Cream pocket cakes from Hillrun Bakery.

Kirk said many of their vendors are Beaver County based, including Brunton Dairy.

Hours of operation are noon to 9 p.m. daily.
