The bitter, broken story of a club being torn apart by politics - The Athletic

Earlier this week, 41 of Spain’s 42 Primera and Segunda Division clubs began group training again to prepare for a proposed restart of the La Liga season on June 12.

The odd one out was Segunda side Rayo Vallecano, whose players refused to come to the club’s training ground on the eastern outskirts of Madrid.

The reason was not fears over the coronavirus or anything health-related. Pay cuts were imposed after the league was suspended, but these were only really incidental to their complaints.

Instead, Rayo’s frustrated players were drawing attention to a broken relationship with their club’s president, Raul Martin Presa, and sharing real fears about whether the club will be in any fit state to return to competitive action if there is a restart next month.

Internal conflict at the Estadio de Vallecas is nothing new. Strife between Rayo’s left-leaning fanbase and conservative ownership has been constant for decades.
