For World of Outlaws champion Brad Sweet, the title defense begins anew on Friday night at the Sprint Car Capital of the World.
Technically, Sweet leads Logan Schuchart by two points after the first three races in February at Volusia Speedway Park but so much time has passed that he is viewing the Knoxville Invitational presented by McKay Group with Nationwide Insurance as the new first race of the season.
Gone is the momentum from winning a career high 16 races in 2019 -- including the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway. Gone is the DirtCar Nationals championship from February.
And due to the circumstances, the first race of the season has taken on the feel of a major, as 48 of the most recognizable names in the industry have descended upon Marion County, Iowa for what has been described as the greatest single-day entry list in the recent history of the discipline.
And the defending champion wants to cement his status as the best against them all.
"It definitely feels like more than just a regular race because we've been sitting around for so long," Sweet told Autoweek on Wednesday. "All the momentum from Florida is gone. It's a new start.
"We're all very competitive and I think everyone is going to treat this one with a little extra enthusiasm. We're going to see some bigger entry lists this summer with so many tracks closed so that's going to make for some of the toughest races we've had."
Even though Sweet no longer feels momentum from his championship season nor his win and three top-5s to open the season, he does feel refreshed.
It’s so rare for full-time Outlaws to have spent so much time at home in the spring and Sweet maximized it with his family.
"I've spent a lot of time with my wife and daughter and that's what matters at the end of the day," Sweet said. "I've had a lot of projects to catch up on around the house. I'm ready to go but I'm trying not to put too much pressure on it though."
