PARIS — For the past five years, The Pie wHole has been a staple among the businesses of the downtown Big Rapids business district, but now it has a new home all to itself.

Within the last week, Pie wHole owner and baker Niki Stricker made the move roughly 6 miles down the road to nearby Paris, where she and manger Doni Cassidy and assistant manger Maddy Stricker have already set up shop.

It has been less than a week since opening for business at the new place, but the transition from one location to another has been an easy one for Stricker.

Moving the shop to her hometown of Paris is something she said she’s had in her sights for quite a while; the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in expediting the move.

“Ever since COVID started, the walk-in traffic just wasn’t there; it just wasn’t as busy,” Stricker said. “We still had (customers), but it wasn’t enough to supplement the difference that we had to pay for being downtown. Just needed a change of pace — it’s much faster paced.”

So far for the Strickers, the change has been a night-and-day difference.

“The traffic that we’ve had down here is completely insane compared to downtown (Big Rapids),” Stricker said. “We’ve done more in three days than we’ve done in a month in Bog Rapids. It’s crazy.”

Stricker said she is very thankful for the community support she’s received, not only from locals in Paris, but from loyal customers in BR who have no issue making the quick trip outside of town to pick up their favorite sweet treat or sandwich.

Stricker added that it’s seven minutes, door-to-door, from the Pie wHole’s previous spot and the transition has been a positive one.

“The township has done everything in its power to help us and welcome us in here and get everything squared away,” Stricker said. “My Big Rapids followers will still come down and have lunch or grab treats for the weekend.”
