THE RUNDOWN
ORLANDO, Fla. – Baylor men's tennis punched two tickets to the Round of 16 in the NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships on Monday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
In BU's first match of the day, No. 21 Adrian Boitan came from behind to defeat No. 48 Florian Broska of Mississippi State, 1-6, 6-1, 6-2. After a slow start, Boitan kicked it into gear to win 12 of the last 15 games to advance in the tournament.
With the win, Boitan earns All-America honors by reaching the Round of 16. The top-20 in the final Oracle/ITA rankings and all seeded participants are automatic qualifiers for All-America distinction.
Boitan becomes the 10th Bear all-time to reach the Sweet 16 in singles and first Tony Lupieri did so in 2015.
Later on in the evening, No. 9-ranked and 5-8 seed Constantin Frantzen/Sven Lah opened their doubles tournament run with a 6-1, 7-6(4) victory against Tulane's No. 21 Ewan Moore/Hamish Stewart.
BU has now had a doubles team reach the Sweet 16 in back-to-back postseasons after Lah and former partner Jimmy Bendeck did so in 2019.
WHAT'S NEXT
Boitan advances to play San Diego's No. 90 August Holmgren in Tuesday's Round of 16 at approximately 12:30 p.m. CT.
Frantzen/Lah will return to the court to face familiar Big 12 foe and No. 27-ranked Emile Hudd/Matej Vocel of Oklahoma State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. CT.
