Parker Sweet, a Commonwealth Honors College student majoring in public health with a minor in philosophy, in the accelerated Master of Public Health program, was honored on Thursday, May 13, during the Department of Higher Education’s “29 Who Shine” virtual ceremony saluting public campus graduates for their civic and academic achievements.

Each year, the governor recognizes outstanding students representing each of the Commonwealth’s community colleges, state universities and the five campuses of the UMass system. Approximately 250 invited guests attend the event, including House and Senate leaders, the secretary of education, commissioner of higher education, members of the Board of Higher Education, college presidents, chancellors, business and nonprofit leaders, students and their families. Students in the Class of 2021 are being recognized for their resilience in the face of pandemic-related challenges and their willingness to pitch in and support COVID-19 relief efforts.

Sweet is being recognized for his hard work in his time at UMass, as well as in the community. He served as a case investigator for the state’s Contact Tracing Collaborative (CTC) run by Partners in Health. On campus, as a member of the Academic Public Health Volunteer Corps, he wrote interview scripts and coded fields compatible with the Massachusetts Virtual Epidemiological Network. Parker recruited, onboarded and trained over 50 undergraduate contact tracers and graduate team leads through surges and complicated cases.

“Ten years from now, the letter grades of the ‘29 Who Shine’ won’t matter. What we will remember is their commitment to their communities in a time of crisis,” said Gov. Charlie Baker. “Our public colleges and universities educate homegrown Massachusetts natives – people who are here to learn, and here to stay. They have shown how much they care about where they come from, how much they care about us, and how much they will contribute to the civic and economic future of our Commonwealth.”
