Sweet City Boulevard owner David Nayfa loved sweets from the start. His college ice cream adventure, What’s The Scoop, produced and sold premium gourmet ice creams, cappuccino pies, spumoni, gelato and sorbets to the best restaurants and hotels in Dallas, as well as the fortunate patrons of his retail store.
Nayfa moved to cakes in 1999 with Sweet City Boulevard, which creates wholesale baked goods. Last year, as home delivery became the norm, Sweet City Boulevard joined in, offering gourmet cakes to retail customers with free delivery within a 10-mile radius of the Dallas Galleria. Additionally, Royal Blue Grocery now offers a variety of Sweet City Boulevard’s cakes, whole and by the slice. Here are a few of our favorite offerings:
Bakla-Cake
Imagine a dense, butter-rich, vanilla-scented pound cake, iced with mascarpone whipped cream, topped with crumbles of baklava. Baklava is more than just the icing on the cake, it is golden phyllo pastry, chopped pecans, and the traditional syrup. The 10-inch cake is pre-cut into 14 perfect pieces. But don’t worry, you can have two.
$5.95 a slice ($60 a cake) at Royal Blue Grocery. $55 at sweetcityboulevard.com.
Lemon Italian Cake
Two layers of sponge cake filled with lemon mascarpone cream. A dusting of confectioners sugar tops the cake for just the right amount of sweet, opposing the just the right amount of lemon, for 10 inches of just the right cake. It’s a delicate, light sponge cake with the perfect balance of sweet and tart.
$5.95 a slice ($60 a cake) at Royal Blue Grocery. $55 at sweetcityboulevard.com.
Molten Lava Chocolate Individual Bundt Cakes
Three-inch Bundt cakes filled with chocolate ganache. Luckily there are 18 cakes in a box. (I think the expectation is to share.) Heat cakes for the molten experience, adding ice cream or fresh fruit to customize.
$5.95 per cake, $72 for a box of 18 cakes at Royal Blue Grocery. Box of 18 cakes $75 at sweetcityboulevard.com.
