What I love about a book series: If you find a story that you love there is another book to continue it. What I hate about book series: waiting for the next one to be published. Months ago, I started the series Legacy of Faith by Robin Lee Hatcher and I have finally been able to read the last one, “How Sweet It Is.”

How Sweet It Is by Robin Lee Hatcher

Each book in this series has been very encouraging. I can’t imagine that anyone would want to read only one of these, but they are also very good as stand-alone books.

The series centers around a Bible that has been passed down through several generations. Each person that has possession of the Bible finds comfort and direction because of the notes and comments that Andrew Henning has written in the columns and margins of his Bible.

Jed Henning was given the Bible at just the right time in his life. Jed was born in Idaho but moved to Washington as a kid. He has fond memories of visiting his grandparents in the small rural community where they lived when he was younger. Now he has to return to Boise, Idaho in search of his brother.

Jed and his brother have never been close. Jed was always very serious about school and success. His brother, Chris, however, was more comfortable playing video games. Jed started his own business under his father’s company and brought Chris in too. Chris developed a video game that became a huge success and Jed thought this could be a turning point for their relationship. Then Chris disappears and Jed’s father temporarily shuts down the business until Jed and Chris can reconcile. Jed tracks Chris to Boise, Idaho.

Holly Stanford had recently inherited a restaurant from an uncle and she is encouraged by her fiancé to open it back up again. Although Holly would rather open a bakery and sell delicious pastries, she thinks that the restaurant would be something that they could do together. After borrowing lots of money to get the building and the restaurant started again, her fiancé leaves her and she struggles to keep things going.

One extra source of income that Holly has is a basement apartment that she can rent out. When she posts that the apartment is available Jed comes to her rescue. Jed is interested in the basement apartment as it is where his great-grandparents had lived when they were first married in the early 1900s. He discovered this when he was given his great-grandfather Andrew Henning’s Bible. Since he doesn’t know how long it will take him to locate his brother, he decides to rent the apartment for several months.

Although neither Jed nor Holly have any interest in dating, they begin to spend time together. Jed introduces Holly to his cousin, Ben, and his fiancé and they discover that they attend the same church. When Jed and Holly visit Ben’s horse farm they find out that they might have more feelings for each other than they thought. (Ben’s story can be found in book 2 of this series called “Cross My Heart.”) Unknowingly Holly might be the one person that can help Jed connect with Chris again.

The author has again, in this series, woven two stories into one. There are several flashbacks to Andrew Henning and his wife as they raise their children and build the farm that becomes their legacy. His Bible has also once again carried on his heritage of faith and family. This was a fantastic story to conclude an inspiring series.
