It's September and many people find themselves very excited to enjoy all the things that make this time of year great!

What You Need To Know

  • Many people have a common fondness for the month of September

  • September features average highs in the 70s

  • The human function of circulating blood to maintain our core temperature does best in the 70s

  • Highs in the 70s have been considered most peoples favorite temperature

This is the time of year we start to rummage through the closet to bring out all our favorite fall items, decorate the house with fall decor, pick apples and pumpkins, and enjoy cozy fires in the early evening as the nights turn longer.

You find that many folks are in a hurry to get to the fall season and the month of September, but is there any science to why that could be the case? After years of hearing viewers' excitement for this month, I did a little digging and found there is some science behind the love of September.

It's not too often we think about how our body works, but we do know that we have a core body temperature we maintain around 98 degrees Fahrenheit. Every process that goes on in our bodies, whether it be digesting food, pumping blood, or just breathing, all produce heat.

We need our bodies to remove this heat so we can maintain our core temperature. If our environment is too warm, then our ability to get rid of excess heat is harder and we start to feel uncomfortable. In contrast, when our environment is too cold, we still can lose heat through natural processes and we can end up feeling uncomfortable from the cold.

Here's where the September sweet spot comes into play: 70s for an environmental temperature is low enough that our bodies can dump excess heat easily, but still warm enough that when we release heat, our surroundings are still comfortable.

With average highs in September in the 70s, our bodies are functioning in their optimal environment. Of course, we can still have warmer and cooler trends, but in general, we find many more 70 degree days through this month as well as into October.

So, the excitement you feel for the month we are in could be due to pumpkin spice coffee, changing leaves, and nostalgic memories, but more likely than not, it's due to the science of how our bodies function.
