Lane County has announced the closing of Sweet Creek Road to milepost 3 in Mapleton due to increasingly dangerous conditions on the roadway. Debris continues to drop on the road as a result of fire and firefighting efforts in the area. A detour has been set up that accesses Sweet Creek road to Maple Creek Road to Canary Road with ends at Highway 101 just south of Florence. The Oregon Department of Forestry has also downgraded the fire from 513 acres to 382 acres and have declared the fire 15% contained. ODF will initiate a virtual community meeting this evening at 7 pm and will include an update on the progress and provide community members the opportunity to ask questions of the fire managers. The Labor Day weekend will provide increased traffic for the area and individuals should be aware that it will caused increased time to pass through the area. High temperatures and low relative humidity will also play a significant role in attempting to control the fire. This morning Incident Commander Joe Hessell commended the crew on their efforts and said that despite difficult conditions and steep terrain there have not been any injuries reported. Evacuation levels are unchanged for Hadsell Creek Rd, Sweet Creek Rd and Bernhardt and Duncan Island Roads.
