According to officials, the level one notice on Sweet Creek Road and the level two notice on Hadsall Creek Road have both been cancelled as immediate danger from the wildfire has passed in the area.

Officials said that Sweet Creek Road is still closed between Highway 126 and milepost 3 due to significant damage and falling debris from the hillsides above and below the road causing safety concerns. Lane County will evaluate the condition of the road to decide if it can safely reopen.

It is expected to remain closed through the end of next week. There is a detour route via Canary Road.

Marcus Kauffman is the spokesman with the Oregon Department of Forestry.

“We’re expecting to have the containment number at one hundred percent by the end of shift, when the team will be transitioning out,” Kauffman said. “We’re going to hand the command of this fire over to the local district to a type four organization tomorrow morning at seven. So we’re very confident of where we stand and where this fire is. We’re basically putting this fire to bed.”

Community members expressed their gratitude for the progression.

“It's looking really good,” Mapleton resident Joseph Muller said. “It looks like they got the fire under control. They did a great job keeping the fire away from here. It looks like they're kind of wrapped up and saved everybody's home.”

Mapleton resident Millie Rochon said that both Florence and Mapleton are one community.

“There were so many donations rolling in,” Rochon said. “Everyone wanted to help. There was nobody who didn't want to help. There wasn't anyone who wasn't worried about what was going on in Mapleton.”

Rochon said that while she feels lucky to live on the opposite side of the river, she has friends who live on Hadsall Creek Road.

“You're just thinking about all those people who are potentially losing their homes,” Rochon said. “The school district that could potentially lose the school, the friends across the river who could potentially lose their homes if this fire got out of control -- but the firefighters did an incredible job.”

As Labor Weekend brings a lot of traffic to the roads, Kauffman said there is something to keep in mind.

“There's going to be a lot of holiday traffic and travelers,” Kauffman said. “The main thing to think about is just to slow down, provide more spacing between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you and relax. It's a holiday weekend.”

As of Sunday morning, the fire was 307 acres and 80 percent contained.
