ALTON — The campaign for Illinois 12th District is becoming an acromonious one.
The most recent volley came Tuesday when Democratic candidate Ray Lenzi of Carbondale alleged U.S. Rep. Mike Bost, R-Murphysboro, is being “chicken” by not agreeing to any debates. Bost’s campaign, in return, accused Lenzi of running a “smear campaign.”
Lenzi on Tuesday criticized Bost for not participating in a televised debate before the Nov. 3 election.
“Debate organizers have told us that ‘No Show’ Mike has declined to take part in a candidate’s debate slated to air this fall on WSIU-TV,” said Lenzi. “This is just another attempt by Bost to hide from the voters and avoid discussion of the issues.
“Bost’s refusal to participate in the WSIU debate follows his pattern of declining to engage with our campaign and with the voters,” Lenzi said. “We have also suggested Lincoln-Douglas style debates across the 12th District but Bost simply won’t respond, preferring to hide behind the trappings of his office.”
Myles Nelson, Bost’s campaign manager, said that debates are often a part of the campaign process, “but only when the campaigns involved are credible in terms of public support, resources, and most importantly, adherence to the truth. Mr. Lenzi’s campaign for Congress has fallen short in every metric.
Mr. Lenzi and his campaign have consistently run a smear campaign since day one, including attacking the family of Congressman Bost,” Nelson said. “We understand that our opponent is desperate to debate because he thinks that the political sniping will make him relevant and legitimize his failed campaign. The real question is — with a bad message, no money, and no momentum — what kind of campaign is he even running?”
