A superband of snow built up over east Denver overnight, dumping large amounts of snow over the city. While the official totals recorded out at the airport will only show a few inches, local reports show up to a foot has fallen over the eastern part of the Mile High City.

Early Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service (NWS) upgraded its alert for the area to a Winter Storm Warning, with Denver getting a possible half-foot of snow before the system stops around midnight.

According to NWS, Denver should expect about three more inches of snow with a high of 16 degrees today. Wind gusts of 16 mph could drop wind chill values below zero.

“A band of heavy snow traveled south along a convergence line on the backside of the Denver Cyclonic Vorticity Zone overnight,” Bernie Meier from NWS wrote Wednesday. “Snowfall rates were around 2 inches per hour underneath this band. This convergence area is expected to remain in the area today. However, what is uncertain is where it will be. Will is stall? Will it continue to slowly move southeastward? Or will it retrograde westward?”

Snow should begin to slow this afternoon, with the worst of the storm being Wednesday morning. NWS warns the region that snow-covered roads will make travel hazardous. The conditions will impact the Wednesday morning and evening commutes.

If you are out and about, the wind chill could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes.

There’s a 40% chance of snow after sunset, mainly before 9 p.m. Patchy fog could develop overnight as temperatures plunge to -4 degrees with wind chill values as low as -12.

Thursday will be sunny and warm into the 20s, but wind chill values could still be as low as -15. The low temperature will be in the single digits.

Friday will see Denver break freezing under sunny skies.
