Three local Sweet Briar students have been awarded scholarships funded by The Al Stroobants Foundation and the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation. Both scholarships are given to first-year students.
The recipients of the Al Stroobants Foundation scholarship were Ashanti Brown ’24 and Madison Luther ’24.
The Stroobants scholars are each awarded full tuition for the academic year. To qualify, recipients must be full-time students in their first year of college and from the local areas of Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst or Campbell County.
Ashanti is also one of the recipients of the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation $5,000 scholarship. She is from Amherst and attended Amherst County High School. Ashanti is a first-generation college student, plans to major in psychology and is exploring the possibility of minoring in creative writing.
She is already thinking ahead to life after college, “My goal after Sweet Briar is to go to grad school and get my PhD in psychology,” she says. “I would love to work with people with mental health issues and be a therapist of some sort. Receiving this scholarship is really important to me because it gave me a chance to go to a school that takes great pride in uplifting women and making sure we get a great education. I have learned a lot in these short months, and I am really glad I am here.”
Madison is also from Amherst and attended Holy Cross Catholic School. She is planning on majoring in biology with a focus on pre-med. She shared that, “I want to become a doctor or a nurse in order to help others.” Madison also shared her gratitude for receiving the scholarship and her appreciation of it began in high school: “This scholarship is very important to me because the Stroobants Foundation helped fund Holy Cross School for many years while I was a student there. This scholarship has also helped me in a tremendous way by taking a burden off of my parents to pay for college.”
The second recipient of The Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation scholarship was Delaney Armenti ’24.
Delaney “Laney” Armenti is from Lynchburg and graduated from Heritage High School. She is a first-generation college student with many interests. Delaney has been a soccer player for years and has passionately pursued two artistic disciplines: figure skating and dance. She plans on majoring in dance. She is grateful for the scholarship and says, “Being a first-generation student means that everything about college is new and exciting. I realize I’m doing things that no one else in my family has done. This scholarship gives me the chance. It’s valuable. It makes me able to change the world and contribute more. It’s wonderful!”
Sweet Briar is fortunate to have the support and contributions of the Al Stroobants Foundation and the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation to support future Sweet Briar women who call this region home.
