NEW ULM — Three members of the Martin Luther College women’s soccer team were rewarded for their play with All-UMAC recognition on Wednesday. Rebecca Krug was named First Team All-UMAC, while Lydia Bitter and Mollie Fischer were each named Second Team All-UMAC.
Krug was named to the first team thanks to her strong play as the team’s starter at right back. Krug scored one goal on the season, but made her presence felt most on the defensive end of the field.
Krug missed four contests this season, but the Knights held their opponents to two goals or fewer in five of the six games she played (including two shutouts).
Bitter was named Second Team All-UMAC for the third straight season, and this marks the fourth straight year she received all-conference recognition (honorable mention in 2017).
Bitter finished second on the Knights in shots (29) and shots on goal (12), and finished the season with two goals, one assist, and five total points.
Fischer was named Second Team All-UMAC for the second straight season in goal, where she started every game for the third straight season.
Fischer finished with a 2.42 goals against average (GAA), 0.756 save percentage, and one shutout (she started in all three of the team’s shutouts this season).
Megan Marohn was named the MLC individual recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team who best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season.
4 MLC MEN HONORED BY UMAC
MLC men’s soccer players Caleb Hengst, Joshua Higgins, Lucas Martin and Isaias Santos all received Honorable Mention All-UMAC honors from the conference on Wednesday.
Hengst was steady in the middle of the Knights’ defense throughout the season, starting eight games at center back.
Hengst recorded one assist on the season, but did much of his work defensively as he helped a young group gel down the stretch to close the season 3-0-1 on the way to fifth place in the final league standings.
After bouncing between keeper and defense for his first three seasons, Higgins made the most of his first full season in goal this spring, ranking first in the UMAC in saves per game (9.25) and second in the conference in save percentage (0.779).
Higgins started all eight games in goal and recorded a 2.556 goals against average (GAA).
Martin bounced back from an injury early in the season to lead the Knights in assists (four) and tie for first on the team in points (12) in only six games.
Martin also led the team in shots (21) and shots on goal (12), and finished second on the team in goals (four).
Santos earned honorable mention honors as a first-year player after leading the Knights in goals (five) and tying for first in points (12).
Santos’ five goals was tied for third-most in the UMAC this season, while his 12 points tied for sixth in the conference.
MLC was also named the Team Sportsmanship Award winners, given to one team each season that best exemplifies sportsmanship during the season. Mark Burger was named the MLC individual recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, given to one player on each team.
