CHARLESTON — Ritchie County’s Ethan Haught and Charleston Catholic’s Aiden Satterfield went back and forth in Wednesday’s Class AA state quarterfinal matchup at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
Haught finished with 24 points while Satterfield scored a game-high 27 in a thriller of basketball game.
The Rebels ultimately fell 68-58 in the program’s first ever state tournament appearance, but proved they belong on the state’s biggest stage.
“I’m really proud of this group of kids,” said Ritchie head coach Rick Haught. “Everyone tells you the rims look different down here. Couldn’t tell today, could you?”
No, you couldn’t.
Both teams shot the lights out, especially in the first half. Charleston Catholic shot 60% (15 for 25) from the floor over the first two quarters while Ritchie was even better at a 70% (14 for 20) clip. However, eight Rebel turnovers led to nine Irish points and propelled third-seeded Charleston Catholic to a 41-36 halftime lead.
Satterfield, who is headed to West Liberty, was perfect from the floor in the half, going 8 for 8 for 22 of his points. Haught nearly matched him, going 8 for 9 for 20 points, including 4 of 5 from beyond the 3-point line.
“The atmosphere was crazy,” said Haught, just a sophomore. “It’s definitely different shooting on these rims. In warmups I was hitting shots and it just carried over into the game.”
Along with his point total, Satterfield also contrited six rebounds and three blocks. Teammate Jayallen Turner added 17 points while Zion Suddeth, who will play collegiately at Wheeling, chipped in 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists.
“That was a fun game to be a part of,” said Charleston Catholic head coach Hunter Moles.
“I’m sure it was a fun game to watch. Surprisingly both teams shot the ball very well from the start. Ritchie County has a great team. Those guys played a great game.”
The third quarter was where the Irish got some separation. Up 44-39 at the 5:48 mark, Charleston Catholic got a 3 from Anthony Minardi, layups from Suddeth and Ferris Murad and six straight points from Turner to take a 57-44 advantage into the fourth.
Aiden Murphy opened the final stanza with a 3 to get Ritchie within 10. The Rebels trailed by 11, 62-51, with 3:55 remaining before Graden McKinney scored five straight points to cut the deficit to six. However, Satterfield’s tip-in followed by back-to-back buckets by Turner stretched it back to 12 with 1:31 left to put it away.
“Charleston Catholic is really good,” coach Haught said. “I thought our kids elevated their game. I’m just really proud of them.”
Ethan Haught led the Rebels in points, rebounds (8) and assists (5). McKinney added 15 points while Blaine Bowie chipped in nine. Ritchie finished 23 for 47 (48.9%) from the field.
Charleston Catholic, which outrebounded Ritchie (26-20) and won the turnover battle (13-10), shot 55.1% (27 for 49) for the game.
The Irish improved to 12-2 and will play the either Poca or Bluefield in Friday’s semifinals. The game is scheduled for a 9:30 a.m. start.
Ritchie finish its season with an 11-7 record. Seniors McKinney, Bowie, Murphy and Isaac Slater played their final game for the Rebels.
“Thinking we’re the only kids from Ritchie County that have played on that court, it was awesome,” McKinney said. “It was great.”
