Get ready for a long spell of bitter cold - WAOW

gemblongsa.blogspot.com

The coldest weather of the winter season has arrived and it will stick around a while. Be prepared with extra layers of warm clothing. It will be cold and it will also be mainly dry so you won't have to worry about shoveling too much snow in the near future.

Today: Mostly cloudy, blustery, and much colder. Scattered flurries possible.

High: 8 Wind: West-Northwest 15-25

Tonight: Partly cloudy to clear and very cold.

Low: -6 (wind chill -20 to -30) Wind: West-Northwest 10-20

Saturday: Partly or mostly sunny, breezy, and quite cold.

High: 2 Wind: West-Northwest 10-20

A blustery west-northwest wind has developed and this will keep the temperature cold for today. We will have mostly cloudy skies, a few flurries and highs in the single digits. Winds out of the west-northwest at 15 to 25 mph will produce wind chills around -10 to -15 most of the day. Wind chills will drop into the -20 to -30 range later tonight as the actual temperature drops into the single digits below zero.

Going forward, there will not be much change in the weather pattern. Each day from Saturday through Friday of next week will have partly or mostly sunny skies. Each day will have low temps in the double digits below zero (-10 to -20 range). The wind will not be too gusty, but enough to keep the wind chills at night in the -25 range so we will likely have a lot of wind chill advisories and wind chill warnings through the weekend and next week. High temps will be a couple degrees above zero on Saturday, then a couple of degrees below zero on Sunday. Temps will probably climb a little above zero on Monday and Tuesday before dropping to zero or a little below on Wednesday and Thursday.

The next time we might have highs in the double digits above zero once again is around Valentine's day. Around that time or later in the month is when there might be additional chances of snow as well.

Have an excellent Friday! Meteorologist Justin Loew, Morning Update, 5-February-2021

On this date in weather history: 1988 - Cold and snow invaded the southern U.S. Roswell NM was buried under 16.5 inches of snow in 24 hours, an all-time record for that location.
