Whisk Me Away, a new bakery in Jacksonville, has opened its doors.
Owners Karen Bergner-McNeece, 32, and her wife, Anastasia, 33, started the bakery at 523 S. Main St.
Karen Bergner-McNeece is hospitality manager and Anastasia Bergner-McNeece is the bakery manager. Both have experience and knowledge about baking: Karen Bergner-McNeece went to school for culinary arts at Lincoln Land Community College and Anastasia Bergner-McNeece worked on designing cakes at Walmart in Jacksonville and Springfield for 13 years.
The bakery serves all things cake -- from cookies, cake pops, standard and gourmet cupcakes to brownies, muffins and pies in many different flavors. They bake cakes any time and for special occasions like weddings, anniversaries and birthdays.
“Make the customers happy, that’s my main goal,” Karen Bergner-McNeece said. “I’m in the business of making smiles and our promise to the community is that we’re going to give them wholesome ingredients and affordable prices, but we want to make moments that matter.”
Cupcakes are popular and Karen Bergner-McNeece said the favorites so far are maple bacon and peanut butter and jelly.
She said she originally thought Petersburg would be the perfect place to start a bakery in 2009, but that didn’t happen.
Over the past 10 years or so, the two were working on savings and saw an opportunity. They said they always had an idea to start a bakery.
The couple put out a customer research survey during the summer and based on the responses, decided Jacksonville was a good fit.
Starting the bakery happened soon after.
The name, Whisk Me Away, comes from their 6-year-old daughter, who is “very whimsical and active,” Karen Bergner-McNeece said.
“When she came into this world, she whisked our hearts away,” she said. “Our mission is to make a future for her and make the community tons of sweet treats.”
The official opening was Monday. There are plans for a grand opening in the spring.
Whisk Me Away is open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Delivery is available between 5 and 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
