Brighten the holidays for families touched by domestic violence with WING's Sweet Home Chicago gingerbread house kit - Chicago Daily Herald

Like so many nonprofits this year, WINGS' Sweet Home Chicago 17th annual fundraiser is heading home for the holidays instead of its traditional location at The Four Seasons Chicago.

For the first time this year, families anywhere in the country who donate $100 to WINGS, Illinois' largest agency serving families touched by domestic violence, can receive one of its popular "Sweet Home Chicago" gingerbread house kits with all the trimmings to decorate it.

Kits include everything families need to build and decorate their own one-of-a-kind gingerbread house. This offer is inspired that last 16 years of joy children experience at Sweet Home Chicago when they decorate and take home their personal gingerbread house.

Order at wingsprogram.com/shc-gingerbread-donation/ no later than Monday, Dec. 14, and BBC Hollydays Houses will ship via UPS one or more gingerbread house kits to you or those on your gift list. The $100 donation includes the cost of shipping.

All children and families, who create the gingerbread house of their dreams, are encouraged to participate in a new contest by posting on Facebook a photo of their creation and tagging it with #sweethomefamilies. All entries must be submitted no later than Monday, Dec. 28. The winner of a $100 Amazon gift card will be announced on Monday, Jan. 4.

On Sunday, Dec. 13, loyal donors, who have raised $9.6 million since 2004 to support WINGS' mission and programs, will gather safely in their homes not only to decorate popular gingerbread houses but also to enjoy virtual visits with Santa and K9 Comfort Dogs and to dance to the music of Ralph's World while enjoying a Sunday brunch delivered to their door. This year's Sweet Home Chicago benefit is expected to increase the lifetime total raised by this fundraiser to more than $10 million.

WINGS helps make home safe for everyone

As the isolation necessary to combat COVID-19 continues, more victims of domestic violence are reaching out. Since March in Illinois, for instance, phone calls have increased by 20 percent and text messages ballooned by 3,000 percent as victims rely on a "silent" form of communication.

Fortunately, WINGS has the resources to respond by providing safe housing and myriad services for victims and their children. During the last 12 months, WINGS has empowered 520 adults to break from the bonds of domestic violence while also helping 646 children. The not-for-profit trained 504 health care professionals how to identify DV victims and refer them for appropriate assistance. WINGS also provided 71,839 nights of safe shelter, 2,835 hours of counseling services for adults and 7,631 hours of services for children.

"Even a global pandemic cannot stop us from serving women and children living with domestic violence," says Rebecca Darr, CEO of WINGS. "Both our delivery of service and our fundraising has had to be adapted, but despite the worst public health crisis in 100 years, all of the WINGS teams pushed forward to achieve new heights and to help more survivors of domestic violence and their children."

WINGS relies on financial support from individuals, corporations, foundations, faith communities and local and state governments.

Proceeds from its four resale shops -- three in metro Chicago's northwest suburbs and its newest one on the City's southwest side -- also fund WINGS programs and services.
