Sayklly’s has been in Escanaba since 1906, when Joseph Sayklly opened his shop on Ludington Street. He and his family grew the business from a local grocery shop that had hand made candy, into a thriving local establishment. Eventually the family split the production and wholesale facility from the retail side of the business, and it is currently run by fourth generation family members. They ship their sweets worldwide, and also offer a wide selection of U.P themed gifts as well. Sayklly’s is home to the famous Yooper chocolate bar, formed in the shape of the U.P., as well as to ‘snappies’ which are essentially the Yooper word for turtle candies. Hand-crafted in Michigan, using cocoa beans that are grown in Ecuador, Mindo Chocolate Makers creates award winning chocolates in Dexter. The company was founded in 2009 by Barbara Wilson and Joseph Meza, who had originally gone to Mindo, Ecuador with the idea of purchasing a winter retirement home. Finding out that the small isolated town didn’t get good internet coverage, the couple decided to open an internet cafe. Wilson began baking brownies, which were so top notch that people begged her to bake and ship them. Wilson struggled to find a good source for high quality chocolate in Ecuador, strangely a country known for growing excellent cocoa wasn’t processing it that much. She and Meza decided to attach this issue by starting to process beans themselves. They now offer bean to bar chocolate, as well as chocolate making experiences at the facility in Dexter, and tours to Ecuador to see it all first hand. Online you can order those famous brownies, get single origin chocolate, drinking chocolate, and cocoa nibs for baking. There is also a Community Supported Chocolate Club, where you can get monthly boxes of goodies sent right to someones house.
