Manchester City play their second game in three days as they entertain new boys West Brom on Tuesday evening. City need the points to try and keep up with the league leaders, but also could do with a good performance to erase the memory of Saturday’s drab derby at Old Trafford.
The blues have a fantastic record at home to the Baggies, so let’s take a look at the stats and see how good they really are.
City have lost just one home Premier League game to West Brom, which came in the form of a 2-1 defeat in February 2003, the day Robbie Fowler made his City debut. That defeat interrupted a run of 11 games unbeaten against the Baggies, during which City won nine and drew two. Ominously for City, the two teams have met 11 times since that defeat, strangely enough with the blues again winning nine and drawing two. What are the odds for a Baggies win on those stats?
Those nine wins have been successive, scoring 27 goals and conceding just six, keeping six clean sheets in the process. City last failed to score in this fixture in August 2005, and before that was December 2001 – both matches ended 0-0. To find the previous time City failed to score in this fixture was December 196, when City lost 2-0 at Maine Road.
City have scored big in quite a few fixtures, and also conceded some goals too. City have hit 6 goals on five occasions since the two teams first met in April 1896, with one of these being on the way to a 7-1 victory in April 1938. City have also hit five goals on two occasions. The blues heaviest defeats came in September 1931 (2-5) January 1934 (2-7), and April 1963 (1-5)
We’ve mentioned City’s unbeaten runs, but what about winless streaks? Between December 1949 and November 1953, the blues lost three out of four games played at Maine Road against the Baggies. Between January 1977 and February 1980, the bleus went winless in four home fixtures again, this time losing two and drawing two, while as recently as February 2001 to August 2005, another four games ended with no wins for City, however three of these games ended in draws and only one in defeat.
In total, City have scored 179 goals in this fixture and have kept 18 clean sheets in all. By comparison West Brom have scored exactly 100, and have kept 7 clean sheets. City have a record of scoring in 22 consecutive games at home to West Brom and this has happened twice – March 1913 to April 1952 and August 1968 to August 2000.

City and West Brom have drawn 3-3 on two occasions in Manchester, the other coming in March 1939.
This fixture has twice been played on Christmas Day. In 1920, instead of tucking into Turkey (or Goose as was the tradition), City thumped the Baggies 4-0, while on 25th December 1924, West Brom gave any travelling supporters a present by beating the blues 2-1.
There has been one meeting in the Charity Shield which came in August 1968, which City just about won 6-1.
